Not all school-aged children have enough food to eat during weekends and school breaks when not in school. The BackPack Program at Redland Church, sponsored by Bright Futures (a local nonprofit organization that helps schools connect with resources in the community), provides children with kid-friendly meals and healthy snacks for weekends when food resources may be scarce. Redland Church has been participating in this program for several years and on average provides food for about sixty children every week during the school year.
Once a week, volunteers of Redland Church come together to load up bags with enough food for the weekend that includes two breakfasts, two snacks, two fruits or vegetables, two lunches, and two drinks. The bags of food are delivered to a local Elementary School that has identified children (who remain anonymous) who are part of a food deficient family and can benefit from a donation of food to take home on weekends. School staff receive the bags from Redland Church and then the bags are placed in school backpacks (anonymously) for the children enrolled in the program.
Redland Church volunteers sort and organize food items, and then pack sixty nine bags per week during the school year. This mission is completely funded by the Redland Church congregation through fundraising and donations
